      To SS Freestyle Trampoline Coaches,

I am writing this blog post to touch base and give a quick refresher on some coaching procedures and few reminders out about tramp safety in the SS Freestyle Facilities.  There is a lot of excitement at these facilities. To keep everyone healthy and performing, we have to continue to refresh and practice safety behaviours to stay in a continuous safe state.

These are some of our general best practices and rules on some basic safety procedures around the trampoline environment.  My hope is they will contribute to your success as a coach and the health of the entire club.  There may be bit of cross - over to the dry slope ramps as well.  Stay tuned for some best practices on dry slope ramps.

Please read this carefully and let me know what you think.

Group Coaching: When there is multiple coaches have a pre-meeting every session to review the lesson plan and establish the roles. Work together and communicate clearly.  The head coach leads the session, and the assistant coach supports the Head Coaches session plan.  We try to establish who the head coach is in the scheduling of sessions.  We also try to have a head coach for each discipline if there is both skiing and snowboarding.  Always do a debrief at the end of your session with the other coach or coaches.

Before starting each session:  Do a general warm-up. Command the attention of your athletes before starting the session.   Everyone must be engaged prior to bouncing. Set the tone for safety and performance.  These sessions should start out exceptionally structured.  The sessions can become less structured, explorative, and more like a jam the second half of each session.  The group Head Coaches must be in control start to finish.

Transition from warm-up to trampoline:  Set clear instructions safety and group management instruction to ALL athletes before the tramp session starts. And before anyone gets on the trampolines. Ensure that in addition to your normal warm-up you include some specific core exercises to stabilize during first 10-15 minutes on the tramp or ramp.  Even if its just a reminder to engage.  Coming up with some exercises is ideal.  Assign these between turns on the tramps early in the session.

Foundational skills - Ensure you give specific volume for each skill.  ie. 10 bounce arms-up/10-arms down/etc.  Maximum bounce time per set should be about 1 minute.  So, taking turns very often.  Equal turns so everyone gets same volumes.  Try to do turns on all tramps at the same time.  Ie. 1 minute skier A on all 3 tramps.  10 second switch.  1 minute Skier B on all tramps.  This allows for smooth and safe transitions.  Especially first 30 minutes of training.

Trampoline Rules - These are reminders. If you have others that’s good. Please share.  If you are currently following these practices please start immediately and share with your groups every session.

      • Head Coach - Head coaches are a qualified Air 2 Coach designated by the program director.  The Head Coach must be supervising tramps at all times during the session.
        • Coach MUST be facing the trampoline ALL the time when athletes are bouncing.
        • Head Coach reviews lesson plan with the Assistant coach every session prior to the sessions starting.  Text, email or google share the plan prior.  The review on devise in person.
      • Assistant coaches MUST have minimum of Air 1 training.
        • Assistant coach follows the Head Coach training plan
      • Demonstrators - Using demonstrator is a very acceptable practice provided its guided through the qualified Air 2 coach.  Establish the following boundaries prior to the session when using demonstrators.
        • Athletes that have Air 1 and/or 2 training can support the role of the head coach.
        • Athletes that do not have Air 1 and/or 2 training can NOT coach or give instruction.  They simply demonstrate what's requested of the Head Coach.
        • Coaches can practice their skills to improve. But bounce with in your skill level.  Use a competent demonstrator if needed to support the session.
        • Its preferred that the assistant coach focuses on their roll and that the head coach leads any use a demonstrators.
      • Always bounce inside the red box.
        • No transfers
        • Complete "stop bounce" on drifts outside the box.
      • Corners - Teach your athletes to NEVER step on the trampoline corners.  This is a key safety rule on ALL rectangle Trampolines.
      • Movement on the tramps should only be done by stepping from the sides or ends.
        • Step on the tramp. NO jumping onto the tramp.
        • Complete stop bounces before exit of the tramp.  NO jumping off the tramp.
      • Deck Ends - One person per end.
      • Trampoline - One person per trampoline.
      • Doubles coach must be working with doubles athletes. Even for progressions and throwing mats.
        • If there is no doubles coach, there is no doubles permitted at the facility.
        • Currently Hayden, Dan and Wade have Doubles Training.
        • Doubles is a multi season long-term training process.  For now, refining skills and learning tricks in all 4 directions up to 1080 is the goal of club level programs.  Also learning multiple axis's. Doubles are a provincial level program skill after multi-season training approach to achievement of all Air 1 and 2 skills in multiple directions.  If athletes want to do a doubles their coach should discuss the steps and formulate a plan Head Coach Hayden Person and/or Program Director Wade Garrod. By NOT doing a double it doesn’t hold an athlete back. It increases future performance potential.  Doubles are high risk and we are not insured unless ALL steps and progressions are taken to show full competency.

Operational Procedures - Crispin and I are currently reviewing these. These will be sent out when available. They will also be posted in Coaches Corner with a printed copy at the facility.

Emergency Action Plan - Please review the facility EAP.  Additionally, please take 15 minutes to create your own EAP and ensure you have taken the NCCP EAP online training. If you don't have and EAP please produce your own EAP prior to you next session.   This should be stored on your devise.  Attached is an example of the general Emergency procedures and facility information.

      Treeline EAP - Click here

SS Freestyle will continue to monitor our safety.  So please report any close calls or incidents to wade@ssfreestyel.com directly.  There are no penalties for infractions. But we must continue two-way communication so we can prevent having unwanted incidents and close calls.  Please expect supervisor check in's periodically.  Take your time in progressing athletes’ skills and fight complacency every session.

Please if you have any other suggestions or aren't sure about something hit reply-all so we can share with each other.  Or give me a call directly.

      Thanks for reading.

      Kindest Regards,

      3. Do you know anyone who would be interested in becoming a coach for SS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard? If so, the list includes their name and contact info.
      4. General feedback - Do you have any suggestions for the SS Freestyle Club?  SS Freestyle is open to your ideas and now is the time to contribute.  Let us know!

Please email this directly to wade@ssfreestyle.com. Thanks for helping us in planning for next season!

LEADERSHIP Opportunities: We are seeking some program leaders / head coaches for Fundamentalz, Gteam and Freestylerz.  Please inquire and send your resume to wade@ssfreestyle.com.

SS Freestyle has started planning for next year.  The club is working on some main priorities:  Coach Development, Facilities, Events, and Communications.  We need your help by answering a few questions and giving us some direction for next year:

      1. Are you planning to coach next season?
      2. What courses or training would you like to take in the future?  One of the aims is to put together some funds for the upcoming season to help coaches that are taking training so please include a list of courses you wish to take.
